Do you know your true worth? Have you ever stopped to think about simple occurrences in your day to day life and how those simple to you gestures might have made a world of difference to another's life?
I hadn't either, until one day many years ago when I was working merchandising in one of the big supermarkets. People would come by and I would greet them with a smile and a hello, how are you today etc? One particular lady I had worked with many years before this particular day, came in and as usual I greeted her with a smile and a warm hello. I noticed she seemed a bit subdued so I inquired a little deeper and asked if she was okay, and I was stunned by her reply. This lovely lady began to tell me a little about herself and her reason for coming to the store on that occasion. She said ' I have had cancer now for quite some time and I had come to a place where I could not go on a moment longer.' She continued by saying, 'I came in today to purchase some envelopes for the letters I have written to people before I went home... you see I had decided to take my own life ... it's just too hard I couldn't do it any more.' As I was trying to take it all in she continued, saying 'When I walked in and here you were with your lovely smile and greeting inquiring as to how I felt, I began to think here is one person who cares and if there is one maybe there are others.' After a little further conversation with her she left to go on her way, I was stunned by her remarks. However, it certainly made me realize that something that is simple and easy for us to give to another can mean a great deal to them and most times we do not realize how far reaching that simple gesture can be. I have never forgotten the impact this had on me that day. After leaving the store that day to continue my rounds, I felt urged to go to the Dollars & Sense store opposite the supermarket not knowing why but feeling compelled. I walked in and just glanced around and here in front of me was a poem about a 'Smile', the first paragraph of which brought tears to my eyes. The thing that goes the furthest toward making life worthwhile, That costs the least and does the most.... is just a pleasing smile; The smile that bubbles from the heart, that loves it's fellow-men, will drive away the clouds and gloom and bring the sun again. There is no room for sadness..... When we see a cheery smile, It always has the same good luck it's never out of style, It spurs us on to try again when failure makes us blue, The dimples of encouragement are good.... for me and you. Author Unknown So the next time you wonder about your self-worth and whether you might make a difference to this world..... I ask you to remember this message because you may not be lucky enough to know the difference you make, I was very fortunate to be told. These experiences have a habit of happening out of the blue!
